More Tales from the Bucks County Underground Railroad

In researching her new book, “Slavery, Friends, and Freedom in Bucks County,” author Pat Mervine has uncovered dozens of untold stories about Bucks County people and places involved with the Underground Railroad. She has been able to link Bucks County to daring escapes, challenges to the Fugitive Slave Act, and even an infamous Supreme Court decision, all of which made national headlines. The stories she will share will take you back to the time when slavery and bounty-hunting were legal, and when people of both races found the courage, compassion, and conviction needed to make Bucks County a safe haven and Pennsylvania a free state.

Patricia Mervine is a retired speech/language pathologist and assistive technology consultant who enjoyed a 30 year career working with children ages 3-21 in Bucks County schools. She has published over a dozen books of therapy materials for SLPs and special education teachers and three children’s books to acquaint them with speech/language therapy.  She was a frequent presenter at local, state, and national conferences.  Pat is president of Langhorne Council for the Arts and is a member of Middletown Friends Meeting and the African American Museum of Bucks County (AAMBC).  Since retiring, she has turned to historical research and recently authored the book, “Boone Farm: Its People and Place in Middletown History.”  Boone Farm will soon be the permanent home of AAMBC.
